Windsor, Missouri – June 30, 2023 – The Missouri Department of Natural Resources (DNR) announced the establishment of Rock Island Trail State Park, which officially became Missouri’s 93rd state park on June 30, 2023. The designation marks a historic milestone in Missouri’s state park system and reflects years of collaboration to preserve and repurpose the former corridor of the Chicago, Rock Island and Pacific Railroad.

The establishment of Rock Island Trail State Park was led by Dru Buntin, Director of the Missouri Department of Natural Resources, with key support from David Kelly, Director of Missouri State Parks. Their leadership helped guide the transition of the historic rail corridor into a permanent public asset, preserving its legacy while opening new opportunities for recreation, conservation, and community connection.

In recognition of this historic achievement, the Friends of Rock Island Trail State Park presented Director Buntin with a commemorative plaque featuring a cross-section of an original rail from the former Rock Island Railroad. The presentation honored his role in establishing Missouri’s 93rd state park and acknowledged the significance of preserving this iconic corridor for future generations.

Rock Island Trail State Park encompasses the former Rock Island Spur of Katy Trail State Park, featuring an impressive 47.5 miles of developed trail stretching from Pleasant Hill to Windsor, Missouri. This scenic route offers hikers, bicyclists, and outdoor enthusiasts the opportunity to experience Missouri’s landscapes while traveling a historic railroad path once vital to the region’s economy and communities.

Beyond the developed trail, an additional 144 miles of undeveloped corridor extends from Windsor to Beaufort, Missouri, representing future opportunities for trail development and public access. While this section remains closed to the public, planning efforts are underway to transform it into a continuous trail experience. In addition, 12.6 miles of an active rail corridor from Beaufort to Union have been made available for future trail development, further strengthening the long-term vision of the park.

The master plan for Rock Island Trail State Park has been released and is available for public review. The plan outlines the long-term vision for trail development, amenities, interpretive features, and connections to communities along the corridor. The master plan may be accessed from the link provided above the article.

Rock Island Trail State Park is poised to become a treasured destination for outdoor recreation, heritage tourism, and community revitalization. The park not only provides opportunities for physical activity and exploration but also serves as a living reminder of Missouri’s rich railroad history and its continuing role in shaping the state’s future.

The Missouri Department of Natural Resources encourages the public to explore and enjoy the existing developed sections of Rock Island Trail State Park while following park regulations and practicing responsible outdoor recreation to protect this remarkable resource.
