East-Central Missouri – The cities of Gerald, Owensville, and Belle, in proud partnership with the Friends of Rock Island Trail State Park, hosted a historic day of celebration on Saturday, May 31, 2025, marking a major milestone in Missouri’s trail development.
Hundreds of residents, trail supporters, and outdoor enthusiasts turned out in force to attend three major events—ribbon cuttings in Gerald and Owensville, and a groundbreaking ceremony in Belle—highlighting the growing excitement and momentum behind the Rock Island Trail State Park.
The day began in Gerald, where attendees celebrated the opening of a newly completed 1-mile stretch of trail. Visitors admired the ongoing work on a 100-foot mural commemorating the Rock Island corridor and enjoyed the local tradition of the Fireman’s Picnic at Legion Park.
Next, the celebration continued in Owensville, with the unveiling of a 2.5-mile trail segment. Guests explored local dining options and unique attractions, including the town’s claim to the world’s biggest horseshoe.
The day’s final ceremony took place in Belle, where community members joined together to break ground on a new trail extension. In Belle, attendees were treated to views of the largest cowbell, a historic caboose, and the local feed mill.
Following the ceremonies, a reception at the Belle Feed Mill featured book signings by trail advocates Dan Burkhardt and Brett Dufer, and concluded with a special announcement from Friends of Rock Island Trail State Park (FoRIT), signaling exciting developments still to come.
“These events show what happens when trail communities come together with shared purpose and pride,” said a FoRIT spokesperson. “Thanks to strong partnerships, support from regional organizations, and passionate advocates, we’re turning vision into reality and building a legacy for future generations.”
The overwhelming turnout and community spirit seen in Gerald, Owensville, and Belle reaffirm the Rock Island Trail’s growing importance—not only as a recreational treasure but as a catalyst for regional connection, economic growth, and cultural preservation.
Let’s make history together—join us in the trail’s next chapter.
