[Belle, Missouri] – May 31, 2025 – The Friends of Rock Island Trail State Park (FoRIT) today announces new steps in supporting Trail Communities and Trail Partners across Missouri’s Rock Island Trail corridor. These efforts aim to rekindle the community spirit that once united towns along the historic Rock Island rail line and to advance the ongoing development of the Rock Island Trail State Park.
FoRIT’s work with Trail Communities is rooted in honoring the past, celebrating the present, and building a vibrant future:
- Past – Preserving and recording the rich history and cultural heritage of communities once connected by the Rock Island Railroad.
- Present – Supporting local events and festivals that bring residents and visitors together in celebration of each town’s unique character.
- Future – Promoting the full development of the Rock Island Trail and supporting local governments and Regional Planning Commissions that advocate for this transformative project.
FoRIT’s outreach is strengthened by the growing chorus of support from hundreds of individuals, local governments, and organizations. These advocates recognize the benefits of the Rock Island Trail development, including the following directly from their letters of support:
- Economic Growth – Increased tourism, support for local businesses, and long-term infrastructure investment.
- Public Collaboration & Planning – Partnering with local governments and stakeholders to foster inclusive planning and civic pride.
- Regional Connectivity – Creating a unified trail system linking parks, communities, and city centers for cyclists, pedestrians, and outdoor enthusiasts.
- Safe Transportation Options – Offering non-motorized alternatives that connect urban and rural communities while prioritizing safety.
- Tourism & Recreation – Promoting hiking, biking, and outdoor activities that boost local economies and visitor engagement.
- Historical and Environmental Conservation – Protecting and promoting cultural, historical, and environmental assets along the trail.
- Health and Wellness – Encouraging active lifestyles that improve public health and strengthen community ties.
New Agreements with Trail Communities
As part of today’s announcement, FoRIT is pleased to reveal newly established agreements with the Cole Camp Community Betterment, the City of Barnett, and the City of Rosebud. These agreements enable FoRIT, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit, to act as a fiscal sponsor—collecting and managing restricted funds on behalf of these communities. This partnership streamlines support and unlocks new fundraising opportunities for vital trail-related projects and enhancements. The FoRIT board voted to donate $2,500 to each of these trail community projects. http://weblink.donorperfect.com/rockislandtrailprojects
New Educational and Advocacy Tool Unveiled
In further support of trail communities, FoRIT has developed a new presentation and outreach tool designed to promote understanding of the Rock Island Trail communities by highlighting unique area features, heritage sites, and showcase local events. This resource is also intended to aid regional planning commissions and local leaders in advocating for the continued growth and connectivity of the Rock Island corridor. www.rockislandtrail.org.
“This initiative is about more than just building a trail—it’s about rebuilding connections, celebrating heritage, and creating opportunities for our trail communities,” said a FoRIT spokesperson. “We’re thrilled to deepen our partnerships and equip trail communities with tools to share their stories and shape their future. It’s all about focusing attention to trail communities”
